One option for website background_edited

The Experience

This first evening is all about getting comfortable in the space at CYANWOOD, setting boundaries, and learning more about the training facilitators, the training outline, and each other!

We will introduce the curriculum with an overview of the training and some trauma concepts for at-home reflection.

Fri, Mar 1st 5-8pm

DAY ONE

getting to know each other and training orientation

In a relaxed and safe space, participants will dive deep into  the science of trauma and the art of trauma-informed teaching, with breaks, journaling and interactive demonstrations woven throughout the experience. We will honor the body's need for activity, rest, and reflection.

Participants will be invited to explore their own trauma filters, and learn:

- an introduction to the science and physiology of trauma, and the varied expressions of trauma responses in the body and on the mat;

- the role their own trauma plays in teaching spaces and in day-to-day life;

- our personal limitations and potential blindspots;

- the basics of invitational and compassionate cueing, teaching space design, and trauma-informed poses; and

- Pranayama (breathwork), mindfulness techniques, Pratyahara and Yoga Nidra (sense withdrawal techniques) for countering and preventing post-traumatic triggered responses.

Sat, Mar 2nd 9am-5pm

In small groups and individually, participants will get to apply what they've learned through practice teaching.  We'll answer questions along the way and offer feedback after practice sessions.

Each person will go home with:

- the knowledge to create safe group spaces, and practice trauma-informed cueing and mindfulness techniques;

- access to powerful, embodied tools and resources for coping with and managing trauma triggers; and

- shell outlines for designing  Trauma-Informed Classes

WHERE WILL THE TRAINING BE HELD?

This training will take place in CYANWOOD Natural Lifestyles Center, located at 2704 Spotswood Trail, Suite B in Harrisonburg, VA. We’ll be in the space on the second floor. Please note that there is no elevator access, however, the stairs have been updated to ADA standards, and there is a handrail and split level. The large space on the second floor contains 2 windows that open and accommodations for sitting in a chair, on a mat, on a cushion, or reclining with bolsters and blankets. There is a restroom onsite and plenty of parking. The space provides a calming atmosphere, with live plants, candles, and ample natural light.

DO I NEED TO BE PRESENT IN-PERSON FOR ALL SESSIONS?

It is highly recommended that you attend all sessions in-person to partake in the experiential learning. We will not be offering remote access to any of the sessions or recording the training. For RYTs, in order to receive all 16 CE hours through the Yoga Alliance you must be present in-person for all sessions.

HOW IS THE TRAINING FORMATTED?

Our instructors, Cathleen, Liz and Jen, will guide you through the curriculum, which includes instructional content, experiential and embodied learning segments, opportunities for self-reflection and journaling, and some take-home assignments. You’ll also get the chance to practice teaching and receiving feedback, both independently and within small groups.

In honor of the body's need for movement and rest, we will split up the curriculum throughout the day to provide time for self-reflection. Participants can choose this time to take a break, or break at any time your body needs. We understand the topic of trauma can be heavy and embodied learning can bring up personal experiences with trauma, and we encourage you to listen to your body and empower yourself to respond to it with compassion, care or alone-time as needed.

In order to stay on track, we will be working while we enjoy our lunches, so PLEASE PACK A LUNCH AND SNACKS BOTH DAYS (see below for a list of things you may want to bring to the training).  We will use this time for discussion and reflection, or additional instructional time as needed.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO ACHIEVE THROUGH THIS TRAINING?

This training will provide you with a basic understanding of the science and physiology of trauma, and the ways trauma shows up in the body. You’ll learn about the tools for managing trauma triggers and techniques for countering and preventing trauma responses. We’ll provide each participant with printed materials from the curriculum, and the opportunity to build your confidence through practice teaching. It is our hope that you leave the training feeling prepared and inspired to hold space for trauma-informed practices on the mat and in everyday life.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO THIS TRAINING?

We’ll be providing a training booklet with space to journal and take notes, but you can always bring your own notebook/journal and a pen. You’re welcome to bring your own mat and props, or the space will have available mats, yoga blocks, bolsters, and blankets for those who need them. We’ll have a dispenser for filtered water in the room, so feel free to bring a refillable water bottle. On Saturday and Sunday, please bring your packed lunch and any snacks. Please note that we do not have a fridge or microwave onsite, so plan accordingly.
